History In 1339, Shoryuji Castle was built by Hosokawa Yoriharu, a leading retainer of Ashikaga Takauji, the first shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate. The castle is located a strategic point to help defend Kyoto, the capital at the time, from incursions from the West. During the Onin Wars, the Iwanari Tomomichi was lord of the castle for the western alliance. After Nobunaga conquered the region he stationed Hosokawa Fujitaka here. Fujitaka fortified the castle and built a double moat around it. The castle was also used as a base by Akechi Mitsuhide in the Battle of Yamazaki after the death of Nobunaga in 1582. Parts of the castle were cannibalized for use in Yodo Castle and it was left in a poor state. Nagai Naokiyo became lord of the castle in 1633 and attempted to reconstruct it, but the castle was decommissioned when he was moved to Settsu province in 1649.

There is also a nearby park made up of the castle's dorui. I went to the temple of the same name down the road but there appears to be little significant relation. I even asked a lady there whom i had saw also saw touring the castle and she was none the wiser. The town also has a koftn site they're working on restoring to its former glory. The castle itself is atypical, interesting. The main bailey is now a pleasant garden.

Stopped by on the way back from another trip. Didn't get to enter the visitor's center but enjoyed walking around and taking pictures of the exterior.

Nice castle and park. By the time I got there the visitor's center was closed so walked around outside and took some pictures. Got off the train on the way back from Ohmi Hachiman and Fushimi and would consider it worth a visit. May head back up to check out the museum and a few more sites in the area.

Today i went to this castle. It's a nice little parc actually and there is a little exhibition on the second floor of the only building. These are objects found during the excavation works. I give it 2 stars because outside the castle they have put a panel, in english, explaining the importance of the city during the ages and a little history of the castle.
